Big Changes in Our City Centre Venue

Rookwood Now Open

Small Plates | Steaks | Burgers | Cocktails | Craft Beers

Our "Tapas Tapas" venue in Liverpool city centre, has now been completely refurbished to an incredibly high standard, and is now open as "Rookwood Bar & 'Cue." After 6 years of trading as Tapas Tapas, we felt that it was time to give the decor in the venue an overhaul. So we are very proud and excited to present Rookwood Bar & 'Cue to you all.

The menu still has a selection of "small plates" available, which can be eaten like tapas if you wish and don't want barbecued steak, burgers or fish, which are our mains now. Specifically, on our menu we still offer the aubergine & courgette fritters with honey, the Manchego & Serrano ham, chorizo skewers, King Prawns, ribs, squid as well as a Mushroom dish. We are still under the same ownership with all of the staff retained, so the service is still to the same high standards. A lot of our best sellers are still there, although we also have a fantastic imported Grillworks Barbecue from Michigan, USA, to grill our meats & fish to perfection for you.

 Tapas Tapas is still going strong in South Road, Waterloo, and we are really looking forward to our big 10th birthday celebrations next year. Since we refurbished there last year, we have been busier than ever. We still very much love our Spanish tapas, and hope that you will pay us a visit there, should you miss the menu from our old Liverpool site.

So, how did Rookwood come about? Late last year, two things happened to create this great new concept. The first was that I tried some free range, grass fed, rare breed steaks and decided that they were up there with the best I'd ever tried in my life... and it was local, from Edge & Son butchers in the Wirral! Then, on my travels, I sampled some meats from an American Grillworks BBQ. I knew that we simply had to offer this combination to our customers in Liverpool. The grill was featured in the New York Times as the best live-fire grill available, giving a smokey BBQ flavour to food. The grill locks in flavour, using V-Channels to capture juices for re-basting the meat. There is only one other such grill in the UK, which is in "The Chiltern Fireworks" in Mayfair, London, which is a real celebrity haunt.

The meat offering is of great quality, so much so that the butcher has won BBC Retailer of the Year 2014. All of our meat is dry-aged for at least 30 days, which enhances flavours and brings out the best in the beef. I am sure that the combination of exceptional local meat, served with the American accent of our grill, will prove very popular. All of the team are really looking forward to this new challenge.

Our extensive refurbishments also include the installation of two new bars in the venue, both of which are open until 3am on weekends & 2am during the week. The downstairs bar in the Back Colquitt St side also offers informal bar food (no bookings necessary), such as burgers, ribs and new great value cuts of steak such as the Flatiron, as well as craft beer pairings. We will be stocking some outstanding beers, including local craft beers from Liverpool Craft & Mad Hatter, as well as American ales, beers from Belgium and Germany. Our staff have been training hard to give you advice on the best combinations, and they go really well with all of our meats. We will also soon be opening the basement “dive bar”, where we don't serve food, but have an amazing cocktail offer and an enormous range of great quality spirits. Both of these bars are a great place to just enjoy a quality drink, even if you don't fancy eating.

The restaurant area will now be on the top floor of the venue, and has a great chill-out bar. This bar will stay open until late on weekends after the restaurant closes, and we will offer booths & table service for drinks. It is an ideal spot to try our experimental cocktails! They include a “Molecular” Bloody Mary as well as a Smoked Coffee Old Fashioned, made by infusing smoke from whisky-soaked oak chips with bourbon and coffee, served smoking in a coffee percolator.

Valentine's Day 2014

Hola amigos,

Valentine’s Day is coming up, and one of the best ways to celebrate with your special someone is to enjoy a delicious meal at a romantic restaurant. We all know how important it is to pick the right place! So, to help your date go off perfectly, we have put together what we feel is an outstanding food menu, with the addition of a Champagne reception as well as our usual great vibes to create the perfect date! We will be offering the same menu in both our Liverpool city centre restaurant as well as our South Road (Waterloo) branch. We also have the added benefit of having Bar Bodega at your disposal for some romantic post-dinner cockails by candlelight, without having to walk your date through the cold in search of a good cocktail bar!

We request a deposit of £5 per person when you make your reservation. Please be quick as both restaurants are already filling up quickly!

From Property to Paella...the Beginning of Tapas Tapas

Having recently taken to blogging on our website, I thought that this would be a good opportunity to answer a question that I hear all the time when chatting to our customers. Why did we decide to open a Spanish tapas restaurant in Liverpool?

There are probably two main reasons behind this, the first being that since I was very small our family business has always involved restaurants and bars. One of my earliest memories was "helping" my mum cook in the kitchen of a pub that the family owned in Liverpool (The Old Bill). I also have a vivid memory of my dad slicing his arm open in the kitchen with a knife, and never being allowed back in again! From there, we opened two other Italian restaurants (Antonelli's in Waterloo and Portobello's in Aughton) before opening Tapas Tapas in Waterloo in late 2005.

My background in Spain included spells living and studying in the University of Seville between 2000 and 2001 (a fantastic city that I highly recommend visiting), then a period in 2003 studying at the University of Madrid, before I got a job working for a property developer in the Malaga region. It was during this time that I developed a love for the relaxed Spanish culture and way of life which, as you will know, also revolves around food, wine, beer and coffee! For me, relaxing at my local bar, whether this was in Sevilla (Cafe Europa), Madrid (Casa Antonio) or in Benalmadena Pueblo (La Parada), chatting with the locals and sampling their simple yet delicious tapas was what I appreciated the most about living in Spain. I loved how the Spanish can take a simple ingredient, such as olive oil, garlic, chilli or tomatoes and turn any meat, fish or vegetable into a mouthwatering dish! The Mediterranean diet became my way of life and I had never been healthier. It was visiting me during this spell in Spain that my family got the tapas bug and, as a result, opened the Waterloo restaurant. Although at the time I had my own estate agency over there (my Spanish property website, Ideal Spanish Property, is now run with my business partner in Spain) when I returned to the UK I wanted my fellow Brits to be able to appreciate delicious Spanish food just like I did for so many years.

So in 2008, I decided to return to Liverpool to expand upon the existing family business. With the benefit of 20 years of my parents experience and know how about the restaurant business, we opened Tapas Tapas in Liverpool city centre to complement the Waterloo restaurant and the rest, as they say, is history. Our goal was to create a restaurant which made you feel like you were in Spain, and was true to what the experience of "ir de tapas" is like there. To achieve this we decided that not only did we have to source excellent produce, but also had to pay careful attention to the décor  the music we play, the selection of chefs and waiting on staff and of course the little things like having Spanish beers such as Mahou on tap, and a wide variety of excellent wines.

Many people tell me that coming to Tapas Tapas makes them feel like they've just stepped off a plane in Seville or Barcelona. The tasty authentic dishes created by our Spanish chefs, the Jamon Serrano legs hanging above the bar, the traditional Spanish portraits on the walls, the hustle and bustle of waiters conversing in Spanish... all of this is what I believe makes Tapas Tapas what it is. It's taken almost five years of hard work but it has been worth while, especially when I get emails from happy customers or tweets from our regulars who love to sample a taste of Spain without leaving Liverpool!

In 2012 the business also expanded to include the very popular Bar Bodega, which is a Spanish-influenced bar in the cellar area of the city centre premises, which serves a great array of cocktails, Spanish beers, spirits and liqueurs, as well as the now famous chocolate "chupito" shots. Many of Tapas Tapas clients use the bar for an aperitif or decide to spend the night there following their meal. The concept will be rolled out into the Waterloo premises, which will be refurbished and extended in February 2013.
